Turkey Day Chicago – 11.27.14


Bird is the word on November 27 - Warm up your Thanksgiving appetite with Chicago’s longest running Thanksgiving tradition; the 36th Annual Turkey Day Run! The Turkey Day Run Chicago brings family and friends together to start the day in a healthy way.

 

Big News In 2014: We're offering both 5K and 8K distances this year — your choice, all at the same price!

 

While you run your giblets off you’ll be supporting the Greater Chicago Food Depository ensuring no Chicagoan goes hungry this Thanksgiving by bringing two cans of food to either packet pick-up or to the race day.

 

Come dressed the part, and join runners, joggers and walkers for some lighthearted fun. We can’t anticipate the weather, but we can guarantee fun.

CARA certified race

Turkey Day Run Chicago has applied for and received the Chicago Area Runners Association designation as a CARA certified race. This race has agreed to adhere to and uphold CARA’s Best Practices Guidelines. These Guidelines embody the highest standards for quality, safety and comfort for participants in a road race.

The Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding, motivating, supporting and celebrating the running community of Chicagoland. CARA connects runners to resources that enable them to run – farther, faster, better, for life.

Course Description

 

The 5K
The Turkey Day Run Chicago will take place in beautiful Lincoln Park along the shores of Lake Michigan. The start and finish line will remain on Cannon Drive, north of Fullerton.

Participants will head south towards Fullerton Ave, turning east towards Lake Shore Dr. At Fullerton and Lake Shore, runners will turn left onto the northbound entrance ramp onto Lake Shore Drive. Runners will continue along the two curb traffic lanes of Lake Shore Dr. for about 1.5 miles from Fullerton to Recreation Dr.

After exiting Lake Shore Dr. at Recreation Dr. runners will immediately turn south along the Lake Front Path. The course continues through Lincoln Park along the Lake Front Path passing beautiful Belmont Harbor and continuing south to a point north of Diversey where runners will enter Inner Lake Shore and continue south to the finish line.

Plymouth Rock Ramble for Kids

For youngsters age 2 to 12, we offer the opportunity to participate in the Clif Kids Plymouth Rock Ramble, on our loop course starting and finishing on closed Cannon Drive – right where the “Big Turkeys” start the 5k.

 

The race will be staged in the following age group heats:
2- to 4-year-olds: 50 yards
5- to 6-year-olds: 1/4 miles
7- to 12-year-olds: 1/2 mile

 

 

Food Donations & Community Support


Greater Chicago Food Depository
Participation in the Turkey Day Run Chicago can be a great way to help the less fortunate with a food donation to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Your donation comes at a time when the need is greatest. Canned goods will be collected at packet pick-up on Wednesday and the race site on Thanksgiving. Everything from soup to nuts is welcome. In previous years we have collected close to 10,000 pounds of food. You can help even more by including a cash donation with your race entry. 100% of all donations go to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Pre-Race Packet Pickup

 

Pre-race packet pickup will take place at:

Please be sure to bring along two cans of food (or more) to packet pickup or the race site to benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Groups of 5 or more: Please email chicagoregistration@lifetimefitness.com with a list of names of each participant in your group at least 24 hours in advance of the packet pickup you'd like to attend. This will help us alleviate wait times.

 

 

Race-Day Schedule

 

7 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. Race-day registration (if the race has not sold out) and packet pickup on the east side of Cannon Drive. Cash only on race day.
8:30 a.m. Fullerton and Lake Shore Drive closures
9 a.m. 5K starts
10 a.m. Plymouth Rock Ramble starts
10:15 a.m. Raffle and awards

 

Parking
Free neighborhood street parking is available, but plan to arrive early to find a spot. Parking is available at Lincoln Park Zoo on Cannon Drive for a fee. You will have the option to purchase prepaid parking passes during race registration for a discounted rate of $17.00 each. Simply select how many passes you would like to purchase, and they will be ready for you when you pick up your race bib at any one of the packet pickups.
*Note – Fullerton between Stockton and Lake Shore Drive AND the Northbound & Southbound Fullerton exits off Lake Shore Drive will close at 8:45 a.m.

 

Awards
Overall awards, including product prizes, will go to the top men and top three women in the designated age groups in the 5K run. Age group awards will be mailed.

 

Kids participating in the Plymouth Rock Ramble will receive a finisher ribbon and a cotton T-shirt. The race will be staged in the following age group heats:

 

2- to 4-year-olds (50 yards)
5- to 6-year-olds (1/4 mile)
7- to 12-year-olds (1/2 mile)

 

The event will take place no matter the weather, so be sure to bring an extra layer. Gear check is available at registration. The event is not responsible for any lost items.
